Watch Taiwanese girls in flashy school uniforms perform the AKB48 hit song.

When AKB48 released their smash hit “Koi Suru Fortune Cookie”, the catchy tune and upbeat dance spread through the world like wildfire, with Japanese company employees getting on the act like it was going out of style.

Taiwanese fans were elated when they heard the 2011 announcement that a new Taiwanese sister group to AKB48 was to be formed. The fruits of labor have slowly ripened over six years, and TPE48, which has only six idols in training at the moment, is now ready to hold auditions to recruit fresh members into their ranks.

Auditions run until 1 October, and the group has enlisted the help of students from 21 Taiwanese schools to feature in a music video of the song that took the world by storm.

This recruiting drive isn’t the first held in Taiwan, as the current six members of TPE48 passed grueling auditions back in 2015. Ma Chia-ling of AKB48’s Team B happened to be selected from that same audition, and was the first non-Japanese to become a member of the massive idol group.

The current six TPE48 members can’t afford to rest on their laurels yet though, as the ongoing audition also serves as a screening test for them, and passing the stringent selection process will see them rise to become full-fledged first generation members.

Failure results in them remaining as idols-in-training until the next round, which might turn out to be a blessing in disguise if it saves them the risk of getting assaulted by fans with saws at handshake events.
