You would never be able to guess it’s a pastry shop from the outside.

Traveling down the street of Omotesando, which stretches from the entrance of Meiji Shrine to Omotesando Station, there are many magnificent and relaxing sights to see. Its tree-lined path makes it a pleasant escape from the concrete jungle that characterizes much of the rest of Tokyo, but it’s also a place you can go if you want to see some inspiring architecture. In fact, just a six-minute walk from Omotesando Station is a structure that looks completely different from the gray, characterless buildings next to it.

Few would be able to guess what this shop sells, as it’s actually the Japanese location ofSunnyHills, an extremely popular chain of cake shops from Taiwan.

This insane-looking building was created by famous Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, who wanted to preserve the natural feeling of Omotesando and pay homage to the shape of a pineapple, the featured ingredient of the cake shop’s baked goods. Another thing that’s great about the building is that as crazy as the exterior is, the inside is just as spectacular.

But here’s the best part: before you make a purchase of any kind, you can try one of their famous pineapple cakes for free! That’s right, after stepping through the main doors, a receptionist will ask if you’d like cake and tea, and if you say yes, you’ll be ushered to the tasting area. This isn’t some little crumb on a toothpick either, but a full size version of their product. They are so confident in their delicious cake, they are willing to give it away for nothing!

SunnyHills markets the cake as “what sunshine would taste like…if it was a cake,” so as long as you expect the sun to taste like natural pineapple flavor with a hint of sweetness that’s covered by a slightly crunchy but equally tasty outside, you won’t be disappointed.

This decadent treat can be eaten at your leisure while enjoying the sun’s rays that stream through the angled wood like sunlight through trees. If you find yourself enjoying the cake, buy a box or two for the trip home because when you think back to that time you got a free cake in this unique building, you’ll definitely want to eat the treats again.
